U.S. Army 155mm Gun Position, Korea 1951
This photo was taken by a U.S. Army photographer 9 March 1951 near Wonju, Korea. It shows an M-114 155mm Towed Howitzer of the 503d Field Artillery Battalion, 2d Infantry Division as it fires against Chinese Communist forces to the north.
Wonju was the point in central South Korea where the United Nations forces stopped retreating, regrouped and fought back strongly against the Chinese who had come into the war on the side of the North Koreans. The failure of the Chinese offensive at Wonju was the turning point where the Chinese leaders realized that they could not push the U.S. and its U.N. allies off the Korean peninsula and might possibly lose the war.
