USS Port Royal (CG-73)

USS Port Royal (CG-73)

She's now stuck on a sand bar at Pearl Harbor. The ship is over 9,600 tons displacement, 567 feet long, 55 foot beam, 33 foot draft. Comapred to a typical Burke class at 505 feet, 66 foot beam, 31 foot draft, and about 7,000 tons displacement it's not much bigger. Both are tiny compared to a CVN (Carrier) which is 1100 feet long and 100,000 tons of diplomacy.

Who's the dunce that did that? That is tough to do. Providing you know what you're doing of course.

It's 106 miles to Chicago, we got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark, and we're wearing sunglasses

The CO just took over in October and I believe this is the first time he had the ship out. He was previously CO of a frigate (a small destroyer-type), which has a lot shallower draft. But they were transferring some people to a small boat at night (9:00pm). It may be that something mechanical went amiss (I kinda hope so) as the ship was just released from dry dock after some fixes. Some people suspect the fixes were rushed. The GPS could have given false information, for example. If that is so the CO can't really be blamed, but if it was inattention, oh, boy! End of career. The thing is, a ship that size has several SWO-qualified officers on board, so right now the issue is getting it off the bar. They're off-loading weight right now in hopes a lighter ship will pull off easier. There's only one salvage tug in the area. It could be awhile.

GPS is only one of the navigational aides though. He should have a clear understanding of the particular port he's in. I go to school for this shit. That is irresponsible and un-called for should not have happend. Oh well, I'm sideline QBing here.....sorry
