You engage center mass of the largest visible part of the body. Cops are liable for their stray rounds just like anyone else. I wish I could interrupt the State of the Union address or the Superbowl halftime show just long enough to shout "DON'T SHOOT TO WOUND!!!". Think about how narrow a target the arm or leg is when stationary, then add the fact that you almost never get a stationary target to shoot at in the real world. It sounds dumb, but you've got to understand that when you shoot someone, you are attempting to get them so stop whatever action they are doing that caused you to shoot them in the first place. The gun is an extension of your physical ability to project force and just as your goal in a fist fight is to end the confrontation as quickly and as safely as possible, the same goal exists when using a Tazer, OC spray, clubs, knives, or guns.

A knife can puncture a vest, but it takes a huge amount of force to cut through a vest. I saw a demonstration of this when I went to PDQ Police supply store in Salina, KS. I went in to buy a pair of Kevlar search gloves and the shop owner actually killed the sale of the more expensive kevlar lined gloves by pushing a straight pin through a piece of vest that still had a 9mm Black Talon round from an MP5 stuck in it. He slashed it with a straight razor and it was stopped. He ended up selling me less expensive thicker leather gloves. This guy was obviously not wearing a vest. He's very lucky the attacker used slashes instead of thrusts, as stab wounds have a much better chance of strking vital organs and arteries.

When I took a shooting class my instructor explained that if you are in a situation where you pull a gun and fire a warning shot into the air(or ground) hoping that will make them stop. Even if it works and they go away that you could still be in trouble for discharging your weapon, esp. in a city

21 feet is the law in my state, for the legal distance to shoot an attacker with a knife

in Chicago,security for a high rise downtown .discharged his .357 after confronting 2 guys that had broken in and tried to ambush him with a pipe.
After they ran away he got the treatment for shooting his gun,immediate unpaid suspension and had to remain on suspension until his court date 2 months later.
He was cleared but reprimanded= no back pay.Appeal underway now.

not a very impressive material after it's cooked in the autoclave. It's impressive when in layers on the bias absorbing energy. It appears it is not very good against sharply pointed weapons like ice picks. I could wear 3 or 4 BP vests and still be very worried about a fellow with a edged weapon.

Yes, if Perp is running at you, he can cover 21 ft. in two seconds. You have less time to draw your weapon, and stop the attac!
Remember, at the end of your shift, you go home to your family,you don't care if the Perp goes home or to the morg. Better him than you. CLEET (Council on Law Enforcement, Education, and Training)in the St. of Ok. now Trains to stop the threat, at 25 ft.

no waring shoot here ether you tell him to stop you have a gun incase the dumb ass cant see ya pointing it at him and if he dont stop you shoot till hes stops inside 21 feet ,and as far as vest stopping a knife or what ever some have body plates that are knife resestaint

No warning shot, this is life, not the movies. Your going to get raked over the coals anyway, so shoot until they stop.

That's part of my wife's training. Don't talk to them & waist time, concentration, & give up your position totally, just punch holes. Your going to have to do enough talking after it's over.

Knife in CQB is more dangerous than firearms, because pure fisics said that action is much faster than reaction.

action is faster than reaction, that is where situational awareness comes into play. If you are paying attention you can usually tell when someone is going to do something stupid and have a better chance of reacting.

I know that he know the 21 feet and 6 feet rule. From the first responder stand point. i have to say someone was looking over him.

Just like the statetroopers and the state of pa.trained me. Two in the chest one in the head. In 10sec you can get heavy knife damage or lose your life. I go with answer a .shoot him.
