we can't have a common culture. I'm 100% for bilingualism. I think everyone would benefit by knowing a foreign language. But there's no one on earth who cannot learn English within one generation once they get to America. I've seen it happen too many times. We need to make sure that happens instead of try to teach kids in 70 different foreign languages because 'it's not fair.' Well, it is fair.

The 'difficulty level' of a foreign language is rated 1-4. The system works between any language and any other language. Spanish is a Level One language for English speakers and vice versa. The alphabet is 95% the same and there are a lot of cognates between the two languages. French is also a Level One. German is a little harder for English speakers and is rated a Level Two. Arabic, which has an entirely different alphabet, is rated a Level 4 for English speakers. I would imagine Japanese is a three or four as well. Both the State Department, the military, and the NSA use this system for categorizing languages.
They also use a three point system for rating how well you do, though you can get plusses. The system is used for reading comprehension, speaking ability, and listening comprehension. If you get a 3-3-3 you are doing VERY well. Usually our linguists get 2+ in speaking because they really don't have to do it much. They listen and read. A 3 means you can speak like a high school graduate native speaker. A 4 means you have college graduate abilities in the langage, and a 5 means you are a scholar in the language.

the alphabets, and there are 5 of them to use to write and or read in Nihongo, (Japanese), but learning to speak Nihongo is actually quite easy. it is a very simple language in many ways. only the alphabets are difficult to learn and for a native english speaker all you really need is romajii because this is just the English Alphabet and it's used phonetically to spell Nihongo words and sounds. it's really very easy.
