LA PINE, Ore. -- Just 24 years old and a 2005 La Pine High graduate, a Central Oregon Marine is now seriously wounded and undergoing surgery after surgery.
Cpl. Kyle Thompson was hit by a roadside bomb during a routine foot patrol in the Helmand Province of Afghanistan on October 25th, family members said.
Thompson's family said the improvised explosive device, or IED, ripped through Kyle's face, resulting in the loss of his left eye and severely damaging the retina in his right eye.
Earlier this month, Thompson's left eye was surgically removed --- and as of now, he is completely blind. However, the family said doctors say there is a chance he could regain some vision.
Last week, Thompson had surgery to remove large pieces of leftover shrapnel from his face and jaw --- and faces more reconstructive surgery in the future.
But most of all, his family said, well-wishes from the community boost his morale and lift his spirits during this tough time.
You can send an e-mail to his father, Michael Thompson, at firstname.lastname@example.org. All emails and posts will be read to Kyle.
Thompson is a member of the USMC 1st Recon Battalion, B Company, from Camp Pendleton.
