I protect myself and my family by constant practice, concealed carry, and being in "condition yellow". That sign would divulge my readiness, and in some places might even be considered brandishing. It might also cause some idiot[s] to think that "there's an easy source of firearms".

SINCE I STARTED buying firearms I have been very open about this hobby of mine. Understand it started out as a hobby now its become a way of life. being a firearms enthusiast has caused my wife and me problems with people less minded..therefore I now practice and preach two things.."secrecy and discretion", no one needs to know what firearms I have or that I even have them. I am working my way to qualifying for my CCW here. when I get it i won't be putting a sign up..

It is easy to confuse security of home and family via firearms competence, with the shooting hobby, because some of the same firearms are dedicated to both.
Discretion and secrecy are far better strategies than "showing force" when it comes to protecting self and family. But if the time ever comes [hopefully it will not] that force must be employed, you need to be prepared to act in a practiced, competent, swift, sure manner.
I would highly recommend, even after you acquire the CCW permit, that you attend one of the recognized training schools, and then establish a regular practice regimen. You will then "carry" in a self-assured but not overconfident manner.

where you won't easily find them. However, I have a neighbor, a nice fellow, really, who indicated that if everything fell apart, he would just come to my house as I have a generator, a water supply, etc. I did let him know that I had 'acquired some protection' so that he might think twice before implementing his little plan.
I otherwise have never advertised, but I do find it somewhat awkward when I defend the second amendment as I feel somewhat exposed even though I say nothing about my implements. It seems kind of obvious. I've always though those signs that say "This house guarded by Smith & Wesson three nights a week., You guess which three' were stupid.
