close support ever made bar none. It is pure joy to watch these birds in action.
None of this F/A crap. I've seen these guys up close and they are actually quite huge. You can blow a hole in the wing and it just keeps flying. I love the flying tiger mouth on some of these. I know of a female pilot of one of these who got her plane shot up pretty bad. She just flew it back. Her call sign was "Killer Chick."
carrie smore armament better faster more maunueverable and somewhat stealthy the whole package
tank killers. holloman afb has those out there.bad ass
In the way they keep saying they are going to mothball them but they have yet to find something equal or better then them so they just keep using them! Love the Warthog!
They are not designed for the same job AT ALL. That's like comparing a cruiser to a submarine. The A-10 is a single seat close support straight wing attack aircraft built around a huge gatling gun, a GAU-8 Avenger. It's a tank killer designed to support boots on the ground. It is also designed for survivability. It can take dozens of hits and keep on flying.
The SU-34 is a two seat swept wing fighter/bomber designed for long missions. It has also never been tested in combat and a very few have been produced. If you're going to do the comparison gig, at least compare the SU-34 to a similar American plane such as an F-35 or a Super Hornet or an F-15.
as far as I know the Russian military doesn't have anything comparable to the A-10. When you want a 'close support' aircraft, you don't want fast, why do you think they were still using P-51 D in Vietnam? Because it was a lot slower than the jets.
your right the french and then the south Vietnamese did have a few P-51's but the skyrader which was developed to late for WWII..was the big dog in Vietnam.. Much like the A-10 loved by troops.. course it didn't have the avenger gatling but did have 6 20MM cannons, and actually had one advantage over the warthog in it could "loiter" for ever.. All the troops loved the "sandy: just as they love the A10 now..
I was down in Tucson when they were first deployed to Davis Mofett AFB, and had buddies that used to go out to the Barry Goldwater range south of Ajo.. The plane is as we all know built around the cannon.. even nose gear is off set for it.. and we would hear stories about how the pilots were thrown forward in thier harness when they touched that puppy off...
I don't know if its going to be around as long as the "BUFF" which is now older than any pilot or crew on it, but it might be.. if it works don't fix it applies here..
So how is everyone tonight..
usual my pard greg has my back when I get the facts all fucked up, thanks. A little research on my part would go a long way....lol http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Douglas_A-1_Skyraider
