I pray no one is stupid enough to try to break into your place. I think you might destroy the whole neighborhood, even with the 3 1/2" 12 ga shotty.

I definitely have some fun toys in the eventuality someone wants to visit me unexpected in the middle of the night. LOL. Generally I find that one rack from the 12 gauge gives wings to would be criminals. One example is when my friend was going to be burglarized and he racked his 12 gauge, causing the would be thief to run and clear his 6 foot fence with such speed that he did not even touch it. Sometimes the psychological effects are better than the action...

racking the shotty

my problem with that scenerio is that you give away your position and let the intruder know that you're armed. If they're in your house with the intent to cause you harm, they would know exactly where you are at and could start unloading in your direction (even if you're behind a wall or door). I prefer the element of suprise. If they want to kick in the barricaded door to my room... suprise

Most perps are going to be black and most of them
will not go up against a shot gun for any reason.
If there is a way out they are going to take it.
Best thing is if you rack your 12 is hit the ground
and observe

I respectfully disagree. The element of suprise is the biggest advantage that you can have. more of an advantage than a 12ga. vs. a .380. I'd take the .380 if I can have suprise.

perps will fight against a hand gun but
WILL NOT TAKE ON A SHOT GUN
I guess they don't want to get blown apart

you're assuming

criminals are smart and are thinking straight. I'm assuming they are tweaked out meth heads breaking into my house to cause harm.

This could turn into the "Auto or Wheel Gun" debate.
99% of the criminals know the sound of a pump shotgun
and no matter how drunk or doped up will not take on
a shot gun. This is not my opinion, I get this from
Police records

fine with me

we'll just have to agree to disagree than. Everyone has their own way of doing things. I would just prefer to play ball on my own terms than someone elses.

reduce their risk taking by committing crimes not involving contacts with victims. For instance, commercial burgleries, stealing cars, grab and run shop lifting or purse snatching.

Your "proven fact" is kinda leaky.

I didn't get it, was the lady on the sidewalk whose purse
was stolen toteing a 12 ga ?
When his car was hijacked was he holding a 12 ga ?
Crime is changing everyday, that's a fact and how
to change that is anybodys guess.

This began I thought with a burgler down stairs
what would you do? Sneak up on him with a pistol
or rack a 12ga and scare the shit out of him ?

Where did I miss the boat ?

with my point, I never said to sneak up on someone with a pistol. I would have the 12ga. already racked, waiting in my barricaded room. The intruded would not know where I was, or that I was armed. If he kicks down my bedroom door, then we can play. clearing your house solo with a pistol is pretty dangerous stuff no matter who you are.

who would be

hiding under the bed? I would be prone behind a solid table I have, with a tactical advantage in the dark with my chambered shotty. 3 1/2" 18 pellet 00 and 3" slugs.

close nail their foot to the floor with an icepick
or chop it off with a hand axe.
Damn sure get their attention

You can have a round in the chamber and still
rack a 12ga. Just pick up the ejected round.
Some one at your door and you say I've got a gun.
Some might believe you and run but the sound
of a 12 or 20 racked puts the fear of the Lord
in them and they are gone

Proper is subjective

While I prefer the isometric tension grip with stacked thumbs, some feel more comfortable using the trigger guard wrap and some prefer to fold their thumbs. Remember the phrase "Your technique is A way, not THE way".

Perhaps, charles

But why take the chance of that intruder blasting rounds as he beats a retreat that may hit you or a loved one? I'm not the "Kill 'em all, let god sort 'em out" kinda guy, but a gun should be ready to go and by the time someone has made it into my house uninvited, the time for scaring him is over. Last thing I want is to scare a guy away one night, only for him to come back the next day and try to steal my guns while I'm at work.

Good point but it is also proven that most burglers
are unarmed unless they get yours.
There is however the perp who just means to harm you
which is a differant story.
Put your guns in a safe when youre not home is the
answer there

My uncle Jack was the sheriff in Louisville IL back in the 50's... (this was straight outa mayberry in a lot of ways, never any crime, never carried a side arm) Told this great story about hearing noise in the house and slowly decending the stairs.. He thinks he hears something so he YELLS up to my aunt Mary "MARY ! I WANT YOU TO GET THE SHOTGUN OUT!! theres like 2 min of silence and Mary yells back "JACK... YOU KNOW DAMN WELL THIER DOWN STAIRS IN THE CABNET!! I know this sounds like a joke, and the old boy could tell a story.. They lived above the jail years later, and my aunt would cook for the prisoners (mostly drunks, or vagrants) think the old jail held like 4 inmates, anyway i remember staying there, and my aunt cooking diffrent meals for them.. He told another story about one of the inmates staying for a week longer than he'd been sentenced for, said he asked the old boy why he didn't tell him his time was up, said the inmate told him he'd had never ate, slept, or had more fun, and could he (Jack) extend his sentence for him..

a man has to hold his word, hold his beliefs, and hold a good sight picture.

and then spent 90 bucks at autozone. My truck holds 15 quarts of oil. 15!!! Jesus. Anyway, charles, about the unarmed perp; it doesn't matter if he's unarmed or not. Just as law enforcement are trained to remember that there is always at least one gun in every situation (theirs), I know there is a weapon in a burglary. Well, lots, in my case. I don't have a safe right now, it's too damned heavy to be moving everywhere I go. I will definitely get one when we buy a house, though. I don't look forward to hurting my son's ears or the cleaning bill involved in shooting an intruder, but the moment someone comes into my home, he or she has violated a very sacred boundary and will be dealt with accordingly. There is no legal duty on my part to issue an audible warning and the way my apartment (GODDAMNED APARTMENT LIVING!!!) is set up, an intruder coming into my front or rear door is between me and my son's bedroom. i will not allow someone the opportunity to retreat into his room, thus taking my two year old hostage. I will shoot and the intruder will die. I know, we shoot to "incapacitate", but 55 gr Hornady V-max .223 coming 3 or 4 at a time from 12 feet away is going to kill. A locked door is the only warning someone will get. If they violate the sanctity of my home, they had better be prepared to kill or die.

I mean this in a most sincere christian way. If GOD cannot damn someone, then who can?
I actually had that question asked by a preacher. His opinion was, this is asking GOD to intervene against a foe. Not taking the Lords name in vain.

I agree. I do not enjoy "that term" but am guilty of having used it. I just need to remember "not all I was taught is true".
