I was there August '64 aboard Ticonderoga,
USS Maddox was snooping in the Gulf with
the electronic interception van loaded,
I think they called the Dakota van.
Anyway, story goes that the CIA had been
up into the Gulf using "Nasty" boats harassing
the NVA. They prolly mistook the Maddox
for another bunch of CIA guys out to play.
It was real busy for awhile launching
strikes against the NV gunboats. 2 days
later the USS Turner Joy reported being engaged
by NV gunboats. Personally, I think it was
a sea story to give that half-wit Johnson
an excuse to get the Tonkin Gulf Resolution,
the ass hole. He should have been out humping
in the boonies with the troops.
