The .308 achieves max penetration at 600 meters and the .223 gets its max penetration at 200 meters. I don't know what range the .50 gets its max, but in an environment like the Normandy invasion, when the guns are a few hundred meters away, the penetration into water is much deeper than at a couple feet away.

the City of San Francisco actually allowed them to have a .50 cal.? They can't even buy those in the state anymore. Oh well, I guess they had science and money on their side.
