When I worked for awhile as a security guard, we would use shepherds when needed. My supervisor used one who was gigantic. At times we had to go into apartments or houses used by drug dealers. This damn dog would absolutely terrify a houseful of drug dealers. When told to attack (which he always wanted to do anyway), he would go flying into the place, not just growling, but roaring and practically screaming insanely, just tearing up everybody in it. When the situation was controlled (generally a short time), only his handler could call the dog off, and he would always be bitten while trying control the dog. At times I would be told to go get the dog out of his kennel and bring him to the drug house. The dog learned to accept me, and never bit me too badly. He'd always bite me initially, just to let me know who was really in charge, it seemed like. I'd talk to him and pet him all the time we were driving to the drug house. Singular thing, he was no danger to children. He seemed to regard them as human puppies, and was never threatening to them.
If you pick up a starving dog and make him prosperous, he will not bite you. This is the principal difference between a dog and a man. (Mark Twain).
